Analysis of Logistics Systems in Retail Enterprises: A Case Study of Auchan Russia

Abstract

This study examines the logistics system of Auchan Russia, one of the largest retail chains in the Russian Federation. The research identifies key challenges such as supply chain disruptions, lack of automation, and increased delivery times due to geopolitical sanctions. A comparative analysis with major competitors (X5 Group, Magnit, Lenta) is conducted to benchmark performance. Based on the findings, practical recommendations are proposed to optimize warehousing, reduce delivery times, and improve supply chain resilience. The study is based on the author's internship at Auchan Russia and a review of academic literature and industry reports.

Introduction

Logistics systems are a critical component of successful retail operations. In the current environment of sanctions, disrupted supply chains, and the need for import substitution, the optimization of logistics has become a strategic priority for retail companies. Auchan Russia, one of the country's leading hypermarket chains, has faced significant challenges in maintaining efficient supply chains. This study aims to identify the main problems in Auchan's logistics system and propose actionable recommendations for improvement.

Methodology

The research is based on a combination of primary observation during the author's internship at Auchan Russia (Barnaul) and secondary analysis of open-source data, academic literature, and industry reports. A comparative analysis was conducted between Auchan and its main competitors: X5 Group, Magnit, and Lenta. Key performance indicators included the number of distribution centers, level of automation, delivery times from Asia, and logistics costs as a percentage of turnover.

Key Findings

1. Supply Chain Disruptions: The geopolitical situation has forced Auchan to seek alternative suppliers from countries such as China, Turkey, India, and Bangladesh. However, the absence of direct shipping routes from South Asia has increased delivery times by 25-30% compared to 2021.
2. Lack of Automation: Auchan lags behind X5 Group and Magnit in warehouse automation, leading to higher error rates and slower processing speeds.
3. High Logistics Costs: Logistics costs account for approximately 18% of Auchan's turnover, which is higher than competitors like X5 Group (15%) and Magnit (16%).
4. Comparative Performance: Auchan has 12 distribution centers, compared to 45 for X5 Group and 38 for Magnit. Delivery times from Asia range from 45 to 60 days, while competitors average 40-50 days.

Recommendations

1. Invest in Warehouse Management Systems (WMS): Implementing advanced WMS could reduce errors by 50% and improve processing speed by 30%.
2. Develop Digital Twins: Creating digital twins of the supply chain could reduce disruption response time by 40%.
3. Expand Direct Sourcing from Bangladesh: Leveraging the author's experience in the Bangladeshi garment industry, Auchan could reduce procurement costs by 15-20% by sourcing directly from Bangladesh.
4. Build Additional Distribution Centers: Constructing 3 new distribution centers in Siberia and the Far East could reduce delivery times to remote regions by 25%.
5. Train Logistics Personnel: Investing in staff training could improve productivity and reduce operational errors.

Conclusion

The logistics system of Auchan Russia requires modernization to remain competitive in a challenging environment. The company must invest in automation, digital transformation, and alternative supply chain routes. The findings of this study are based on the author's practical experience and academic analysis, and they offer a clear roadmap for improvement. Future research could explore the feasibility of a dedicated Bangladesh-Russia garment supply corridor to further reduce costs and diversify sourcing.
