Not far from Krasnodar, in Kuban, field works are in full swing: signals sent into the earth's depths with the help of a movable vibroseismosource are coming back with data on the structure of a local lithospheric plate. Sophisticated instruments are used for detecting and interpreting relevant information. Undergraduates, post-graduates and researchers of Kuban State University are taking part in this experiment. Research is headed by one of the developers of a new concept of earthquake prognostication, rector of Kuban State University, Academician V. Babeshko, and Professor R. Williams of Tennessee University (USA).

Special place of pride is held by an American seismograph of a new generation - NX-48, equipped with a three-kilometer cable and a thousand geophonesensors. Funds for its purchase were allocated from the budget of the Krasnodar Territory, while several US universities helped to deliver it to Russia in time, among them, the Association of Colleges of the Middle West.

A site for research was selected on the recommendation of the АО Rosneft- Termneft Company. Research and practical tasks were solved simultaneously - it was determined where exactly oil and other raw materials were deposited. With the help of the same technology it is also possible to carry out geotechnological assessment of the state of dams and dykes as well as the behavior of landslides.

The Krasnodar Territory is an extremely interesting region of young mountains, a convenient object for studying the structure and changes in the earth crust. According to Professor R. Williams, the Kuban experiment is an important step on the way to earthquake forecasting; and in future it will be necessary to organize an international center of new technologies for geological and seismological research on the basis of Kuban and Tennessee universities. The center might be used for testing the equipment, training specialists, collecting and processing data from the Black Sea region. This idea was supported by the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Industry and Science, Ministry of Emergencies and Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.

The men in charge of this experiment believe that at least part of the research in earthquake forecasting must be shouldered by other countries of the Black Sea region as well. This is quite feasible, if we consider the existing network of hydrogeological wells as well as the nonexpensive, sufficiently precise instruments for measurements, manufactured by the Krasnodar plant ZIP. Thus considerable progress could be achieved in amassing data on the deformation of the surface of the lithospheric plate in the Kuban Region.
