On November 1, 2012, the Institute of World History of the Russian Academy of Sciences held a regular meeting of the Joint Ukrainian-Russian Commission of Historians, represented mainly by specialists from academic institutions of Ukraine and the Russian Federation. The Ukrainian delegation headed by the Director of the Institute of History of Ukraine of NASU Academician V. A. Smoliy was made up of his staff, doctors of Historical Sciences G. V. BoryakG. V. KasyanovI. I. KolesnikA. E. LysenkoV. M. Rychka and A. A. Udod. From the Russian side, the meeting was attended by the following scientists: A. A. Chubaryan, Director of the Institute of World History of the Russian Academy of Sciences, V. V. Ishchenko( Institute of World History of the Russian Academy of Sciences), E. I. Pivovar and L. E. Gorizontov (Russian State University for the Humanities), I. N. Danilevsky (Higher School of Economics), M. V. Dmitriev (Moscow Lomonosov State University), V. A. Kuchkin (Institute of Russian History of the Russian Academy of Sciences), V. I. Mironenko (Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences), T. G. Tairova (Center for the Study of the History of Ukraine of St. Petersburg State University), B. M. Florya (Institute of Slavic Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences).

After the traditional presentations of the commission's co-chairs, Acad. V. A. Smoliy and Acad. A. A. Chubaryan, on the achievements and plans of historians of both countries, as well as the problems of academic communities in Ukraine and the Russian Federation, the participants took part in the discussion of the concept of a promising historiographic project, the contours of which gradually emerged in discussions during similar forums over the past two or three years.

We are talking about two parallel generalizing studies on the dynamics of the development of historical science in Ukraine and the Russian Federation over the past two decades through the prism of highlighting the key problems of national history of the XX century. These two collective works (most likely in the form of essays), according to the commission members, could represent the theoretical, methodological, source and factual achievements of the two countries. national historiographies and could be published in a joint publication under the provisional title " problems of Ukrainian and Russian history of the XX century." in the coverage of national historiographies of the modern era (late 1980s-2012)".

The subject of discussion was several alternative proposals regarding the project concept and structure of essays. In particular, the Ukrainian participants voiced the following possible approaches to the construction of the study: chronological (the history of Ukraine in the XX century is divided into 12 broad chronological periods, for example, " Ukraine in two empires at the beginning

century", " Ukraine in the First World War (1914-1916)", " the Ukrainian Revolution (1917-1923)", " the Ukrainian SSR in the period of NEP (1921-1928)", etc.); thematic (21 thematic blocks were proposed, in particular " the formation of the Ukrainian nation within the borders of two empires (1900-1916)"; "Historiography of the UPR"," the state of Hetman P. Skoropadsky in the assessments of historians", etc.); synthetic (we are talking about generalizing studies within the whole century, for example," diplomatic history of Ukraine"," demographic history of Ukraine"," ethnonational history of Ukraine"," regional history of Ukraine", etc.). The author of these proposals was S. V. Kulchitsky.

Considerable interest was aroused by the idea of I. I. Kolesnik regarding a problematic approach to the construction of historiographic essays. In particular, it is proposed to focus on an analytical study of the historiographical heritage of both countries on one or several key issues, such as: "political systems and political regimes in Ukraine in the XX century", "main stages and models of modernization of the Ukrainian economy", "images of war and revolution in public consciousness and scientific discourse", " Ukraine in the XX century: the national question vs multiculturalism", "cultural identities and collective memory of Ukrainians", etc.

Russian colleagues proposed their own problem-based version of the concept of a possible project, which provides for the preparation of ten essays: "modernization of Russia and Ukraine-results at the beginning of the XX century and regional features", "Russian and Ukrainian revolutions", "formation of the USSR, NEP and Ukrainization", "the first five-year plan and the famine of 1932-1933", "The Thirties in Russia and Ukraine: regional aspects", "World War II: the fate of the peoples of Russia and Ukraine", "the Soviet man after the war: common Slavic and national", " Perestroika: common dreams and National "divorce"", "ways of independence: national models and interstate relations", "Russian-Ukrainian relations".- Ukrainian relations at the beginning of the XXI century."

The participants of the meeting recognized the necessity and obvious usefulness of a historiographical dialogue between historians of the two academic communities, because the proposed project will first of all help each side to better understand the path taken by the national historiography since the late 1980s. The best option for the layout of the publication was considered to be the preparation of parallel texts within each section or on each issue. Discussion of the project will continue in the future.

Those present were no less interested in hearing T. G. Tairova's report on the prospects of a joint archeographic project, which actually started last year (see: Tairova-Yakovleva T. G. the chronicle of Samoyl Velichko: on the issue of a new academic publication // Ukrainian Historical journal. - 2012. - N 2. - p. 190-198.). We are talking about a complete academic edition of the text of the famous Cossack chronicle of the Early Modern era-the chronicle of Samoyl Velichko. The project participants are the Institute of History of Ukraine of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the V. I. Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine (NBUV), and the Russian National Library in St. Petersburg (the original is kept here). It is assumed that the several-volume edition will contain a metagraphed text of the memo with discrepancies in the list stored in the NBU, as well as in preliminary publications, a full word guide to the text, and a facsimile. The publication is supported by the Foundation of Departments of Ukrainian Studies (USA). The next meeting of the commission is scheduled to take place in Ukraine in October 2013.
